Strawberries and raspberries are still going!

With October weather upon us the weather might not seem like strawberry season should still be going, but it is! We continue to pick strawberries and raspberries from our fields seven days a week.

With the cold and rain our strawberries are ripening much slowly, resulting in a much oranger berry. With night time temperatures in the single digits they just don’t ripen at night. BUT, like grapes¬† the cold weather brings out the sugars in them so despite their light colour they’re disceptively sweet.

Our raspberries from the field and tunnels are as good as ever and we’re LOVING these fall berries. Should be available well past Thanksgiving and they’re so yummy!

Local squash, apples and sweet corn (yes, corn!) is available as well.

Want the berry latest? Call our Berry Hotline for current availability and pricing. 519-461-1416 ext 2!

Please note this page is not updated daily, rather it’s a general overview of where the season is as at and what’s available. If you’d like to double check on availability, due to poor weather (rain) and want a current daily or hourly availability it’s always best to call the store.¬†

Few things compare to the taste of a delicious locally grown peach. Fuzzy and sunkissed on the outside, sweet and bursting with juice and flavour inside. At Heeman’s we work directly with our friends at Kai Wiens Family Farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The peaches are picked up several times a week so they are always farm fresh!

Fresh sweet corn has a taste you can’t beat and the corn at Heeman’s is the freshest around! That’s because we have it delivered field fresh every day from Aarden Farms, just a few roads over from us, we refrigerate it immediately and pull it out right before you buy it. Normally in season sometime in July and available until Thanksgiving!

Keeping sweet corn cool is the trick to great taste. It slows the sugars from converting to starch. Also, keeping the husk on the cob for as long as you can, right up until cooking will lock in the freshness and flavour! We love working with the Aarts family because they share our obsession with flavourful, fresh local food! They’ve been our trusted sweet corn supplier for years. With the latest varieties and by using a raised bed and irrigation, sweet corn is usually in season from mid-July available until early October.

If you love cherries and want to enjoy them all year long there is no better way then to get yourself a pail or two (or five) of freshly picked and pitted cherries. We offer pails of sweet or sour cherries that come with pits and stems removed in 10 pound pails. If you prefer your cherries fresh and not frozen (it’s easier to transfer into smaller containers), we take orders at the beginning of the season. You can request cherries with or without sugar. We do carry frozen pails through the season and into winter.

Our pails of cherries come from Delhaven Orchards in Blenheim where they’re grown. You can call us at 519-461-1416 to place your order for pails through the first three weeks of July.

* Sorry, pailed cherries are sold out for the year.
