Vegetable Supervisor

You not only have a passion for growing veggies, but you’re also good at growing a team! This dynamic role will see you embracing seasonal changes from leading the busy peak season veggie team to the challenge of planting in the off season.

As the Vegetable Supervisor, you will bring the Heeman’s brand to life in the Vegetable department by delivering exceptional customer service as well as maintaining inventory and visual brand standards.  You will be a proponent for all our edible products including vegetables, fruits, and herb plants.

What Does Your Workday Look Like?

  • Making sure visual brand standards and inventory levels are maintained.
  • Assisting customers by locating specific products, making informed recommendations, advising them on appropriate plant care and answering any additional questions they might have.
  • Training, Coaching and Motivating new and returning staff in the Vegetable department.
  • Directing and Participating in the restocking process by condensing the available product, replenishing low inventory levels from backstock, writing replenishment lists, and moving product from the hoop houses for backstock.
  • Assuring the appearance of the Vegetable House is maintained by straightening containers, pinching the plants as they grow and removing debris particles from the plants, staking tomatoes when necessary and inspecting for pests daily.
  • Answering radio calls from all departments with appropriate radio etiquette.
  • Cleaning the physical space by sweeping/weeding the floor, emptying any garbage or compost bins, cleaning litter and organizing the shared staff space.
  • Operating a golf cart safely and effectively; Training will be required prior to use.
  • Any other task as assigned by your manager.
  • Work in compliance with all human resources, operational (SOP) and Food, Health & Safety policies and procedures.

January – March 

  • Work in production with the Annuals Manager planting unrooted cuttings
  • Achieving production numbers set by the manager

April – June  

  • Setup and maintain displays, marketing and/or signage in the Vegetable Area.
  • Replenishing merchandise and products in the vegetable department
  • Training new Greenhouse Associates and preparing them for the peak season
  • Overseeing the Veggie Seasonal team on a direct supervision level.
  • Communicating with the Production Manager about inventory levels, staffing needs, bestsellers, etc. 

July – August 

  • Communicating with the Production Department on high-moving annuals and basket sales to maximize sales in non-peak season
  • Assist in supervising of Greenhouse Associates on the Annuals team

September – October 

  • Replenishing fall inventory on the Annuals floor
  • Assist in supervising of Greenhouse Associates on the Fall Annuals team

November – December 

  • Flexible to be part of any retail or production team, depending on the needs of the business each year

What Will You Bring to the Table?

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to supervise and delegate tasks
  • Knowledge of edible plants including vegetables, fruit and herbs
  • Strong communication, both written and verbal
  • Capable of following direction and working independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to manage frequent interruptions
  • Adaptability to a continuously changing work environment
  • Minimum two years experience in a supervisory or leadership role in the customer service industry
  • Leadership and capacity to train, coach and inspire fellow Daymakers
  • Excellent organizational skills including attention to detail and time management
  • Inventory control experience
  • Prior retail, agriculture or greenhouse work experience is considered an asset
  • Language: advanced English (written and oral)

Availability: 

  • Availability to work before and after regular hours and during all hours of operation (which will include evening and weekends)
  • Availability to work up to 6 days per week
  • Flexibility to accommodate scheduling changes
  • Open availability for peak season (April 1st – June 30th)
  • Transportation plan; Heeman’s is not located on a bus route

The environment here in the greenhouse and outdoors means it can be sunny and hot or cold and snowy. To lead your team that can include 18+ Daymakers at peak, you’ll need to be capable of performing in this kind of environment and you’ll spend most of your time on the sales floor with your team, leading by example and sometimes standing for prolonged periods, and maybe even helping a guest lift plants (that can weigh up to 50lbs).
